Clara Barton. Croix-rouge américaine. Born in North Oxford, Massachusetts, on Christmas Day in 1821, she rose from small farm background to become a schoolteacher, governement worker, Civil War nurse, women's prison superintendent and dedicated humanitarian. Altough not a religious woman, late in life she endorsed the Christian Science movement and dabbled in spiritualism, consulting mediums and astrologers on occasion.
