The collapse of Xe-Pian Xe-Namnoy hydropower dam collapse in Attapeu Province, Lao PDR on 23 July has caused massive flash floods that affected more than 13,000 people in the area. Five weeks after the incident, as many as 6,000 people still remain in emergency shelters, many of which are in the areas only accessible by helicopters. Recover is ongoing, but faced with challenges. The devastating flood has left many people displaced and separated from their loved ones. With each day that passes, the realisation has begun to grow among some of them that their family may never be found. The Mitsamphan mortuary has become a place where people come with hope to hear news about their loved ones. To some, the mortuary is an emotional centre where families can begin to grieve and get some closure.
