Francesco Romani

Francesco Romani is a British Red Cross Research Fellow at the Lauterpacht Centre for International Law of the University of Cambridge. In this capacity, he contributes to the joint British Red Cross/International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) project on customary international humanitarian law, and is a Research Associate for Wolfson College. Prior to joining the project, Francesco worked as a research assistant for the IHEID Global Governance Centre, the Harvard Law School Program on International Law and Armed Conflict, and Interpeace.

Francesco holds a PhD in international law from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, with his thesis focusing on the notion and function of belligerent reprisals in international armed conflict. During his doctoral studies, he was a Michigan Grotius Research Scholar at the University of Michigan Law School and a Visiting Researcher at Harvard Law School. He holds a Law Degree from the University of Pavia, where he was affiliated with the Collegio Borromeo; he has also been awarded the Diploma in Social Sciences from the Institute of Advanced Study (IUSS) in Pavia and the Certificat de Droit Transnational from the University of Geneva. His research interests span from international humanitarian, criminal and human rights law to peace-building and strategic studies.

Emilie Fitzsimons

Emilie Fitzsimons is a British Red Cross Research Fellow on the joint British Red Cross/International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) project on customary international humanitarian law. Prior to joining the project, Emilie worked as a fee-earner in the corporate department of Baker & McKenzie in Luxembourg. She also worked within the Abuses in Counter-Terrorism team at Reprieve, where she undertook research and drafted memoranda relating to the legality of US drone strikes under international law, as well as the treatment of Guantanamo Bay detainees. Emilie also has experience working as an intern at Redress, where she monitored ICC jurisprudence, drafted legal updates of ICC cases, and represented Redress at the 14th Assembly of State Parties of the International Criminal Court alongside a legal advisor.
Emilie holds an LLM in international law from University College London, as well as a double degree in French and English law from the University of Strasbourg in partnership with the University of Leicester.

Claudia Maritano

Claudia Maritano is a British Red Cross Senior Research Fellow on the joint British Red Cross/International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) project on customary international humanitarian law. In this position, she leads the team of researchers updating the Customary International Humanitarian Law Database. Claudia is also a Research Associate at Wolfson College.

Prior to joining the project, Claudia worked as a legal associate at the legal division of the ICRC in Geneva. She also worked as a legal intern at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights. Claudia holds an LL.M. in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights from the Geneva Academy and a Master’s degree in Law from the University of Torino, Italy. 

Silvia Scozia

Silvia Scozia is a British Red Cross Research Fellow on the joint British Red Cross/International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) project on customary international humanitarian law. Prior to joining the project, Silvia worked as a Legal Associate at the ICRC Advisory Service on International Humanitarian Law in Geneva. In 2015-2016, Silvia worked as a Counsel and Research Analyst for the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain in Madrid. She also worked as a legal intern at the International Migration Law Unit of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and at the Office of the Prosecutor at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Silvia holds a Bachelor and Master’s Degree in Law, and an LL.M. in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights from the Geneva Academy.
