ICRC Humanitarian Law and Policy blog post - 50 steps to a mine-free world by 2025, Near Bagram air base, a demining operation 2007, M, KOKIC / ICRC

Environs de la base aérienne de Bagram. Opération de déminage. Near Bagram air base. Demining operation. Under the Convention, no new mines may be laid, all stockpiles must be destroyed, and contaminated land has to be cleared. Here an Afghan deminer prods the earth around Baghram airbase in search of mines and other deadly objects from the Soviet war of the 1980s, the civil war in the 1990s, the Taliban era or the US-led air strikes in 2001. At least 10 people from nearby villages have been killed or injured in the past six months. (Many incidents are never reported.)
