United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Disasters and Conflicts Branch
Since its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been the global authority that sets the environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.
The Disasters and Conflicts Branch is responsible for upholding UNEP’s mandate to account for the special needs of countries and regions affected by or at risk of disasters and conflicts, whilst enhancing the effectiveness of environmental assistance and recovery in such regions. Through the application of science and evidence-based approaches, the branch works with partners at international, national and sub-national levels to foster environmental cooperation in complex settings; reduce disaster risk through anticipatory and preparatory actions; assess and respond to environmental emergencies and mitigate their impact; and implement effective, long-term environmental recovery strategies for a sustainable and resilient future.
