Cairo (ICRC / ERC) –The Egyptian Red Crescent Society (ERCS), in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), distribute 469 tons of food aid, 14 tons of hygiene kits as well as floor mats to 7,000 households in North Sinai.
The distribution, which is conducted by the volunteers of the ERC during the month of February, is meant to alleviate the humanitarian consequences for the families affected by the events in North Sinai.
This is the fourth time that the ERC and the ICRC have responded to the humanitarian needs of people in North Sinai. In January 2019, 650 tons of food items were distributed among 10,000 families in El-Arish, Bir el-Abd, and surrounding areas.
Both ERC and the ICRC are part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. They work in close cooperation to provide humanitarian support and make efforts to reunite families or re-establish contact between them after they’ve been separated as a result of conflict and other violence in the region.
The two organizations have also been working together to enhance the capacity of the ERC staff and volunteers. Recently, the ICRC conducted a six-day workshop for ERC volunteers in North Sinai, equipping them with communication and first-aid skills. The workshop was designed to help them during the distribution and for it to be carried out based on the principles of humanity, impartiality, neutrality, and independence that guide the Movement.
