epa05959148 Egyptian fishermen drive their boats to the port after a night of fishing off the coast of Al-Max in Alexandria, Egypt, 12 May 2017. Al-Max is a small neighborhood with old, low-rise buildings lying along the banks of Lake Mahmodeya. The lake connects Alexandria to the Nile River and suffers from water pollution. According to local fisherman, a minimum of 13 factories dump waste into the local water supply, affecting the quality of fish and the standard of living for the locals who primarily survive on the fishing industry. The nearest healthcare unit is 40 minutes away and locals claim the two primary schools located in the area are insufficient to meet the needs of the local population. EPA/KHALED ELFIQI PHOTO SET
