As one of the leading humanitarian organisations, the ICRC considers its moral responsibility to integrate sustainability into the organisation. The New Delhi delegation has actively made efforts to adopt sustainable practices and has recently purchased electric cars that use rechargeable batteries and produce zero emissions. They are environment-friendly and economical.

Since 2013 — when it first started waste-paper recycling — the delegation, with the support of its sustainable development unit, has embraced several new practices in order to reduce its carbon foorprint. Some of these include composting, use of LED lights, electronic-waste recycling, and waste segregation. While the recycled paper is converted into eco-friendly stationery such as notepads, paper bags and envelopes, the delegation’s organic waste from the kitchen and garden is converted to compost, which being rich in nutrients, replenishes top soil without any other effects.

Not only are such initiatives rewarding in terms of moving forward on this green path, but these also allow the New Delhi delegation to make optimal use of its financial resources.
