The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Indian Spinal Injuries Center (ISIC) conducted a seven-day ‘Wheelchair Services Training Package – Basic Level’ (WSTP – Basic) training program developed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The course – held at the ISIC from 26 November to 2 December – was attended by participants from Jammu, Vellore, Raigarh and Guwahati.
WSTP – Basic has been the first in a series of planned training packages which will support improvements in the provision of wheelchair services to further develop the skills and knowledge of personnel involved in wheelchair service delivery.
As part of the course, wheelchair users were trained in the use and maintenance of wheelchairs and how to stay healthy while using them. The training has helped improve the competencies of wheelchair service providers and therefore the quality of wheelchair service delivery. Through such initiatives as this, the ICRC hopes to achieve greater integration of wheelchair service delivery into rehabilitation services.
The course was conducted by trainers from Motivation Charitable Trust, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, and the ICRC.
