The Regional Communication Centre (RCC) in New Delhi is looking to hire an English language specialist/editor for a six-month maternity cover. As an editor, you will be responsible for preparing texts and communication products for publication.

The editor is responsible for:

  • Editing texts in English
  • Managing a pool of external editors
  • Coordinating work by assigning the work internally or to the pool of external editors
  • Negotiating with clients, monitoring work progress and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Providing editorial oversight of communications generated by ICRC.

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Editing

The editor shall:

  • Edit a range of texts in English (press releases, key reports, policy and position papers, web articles, social media posts, presentations for press conferences, etc.)
  • Liaise regularly with the English team at the ICRC’s headquarters about terminology and style in order to achieve coherence and consistency across all ICRC content
  • Relay decisions on terminology and style to the external editors and other communications staff in delegations
  • Implement terminology and style decisions made by the English team at headquarters
  • Assess the quality of the work done by the pool of external editors and give feedback
  • Review texts carried out by external editors before they are delivered to ICRC clients.
  1. Coaching and coordination

The editor shall:

  • Manage editing requests daily, prioritizing and managing the workflow with delegations
  • Liaise directly with clients in delegations, such as regional public relations officers or communication delegates, to resolve any issues or to discuss texts
  • Refer to the English language team at headquarters for confidential or sensitive texts
  • Maintain the network of external editors and regularly assess their work, ensuring they edit in line with the organization’s values and Fundamental Principles
  • Ensure that external editors have all the reference materials necessary for their work
  • Liaise with the head of the RCC about workload and planning at delegation level
  • Liaise with the head of the RCC in order to comply with the wider organizational strategy.

Required qualifications and experience:

  • University degree in English or similar from a recognized academic institution
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Very good analytical and writing skills
  • At least five years’ experience writing for an international audience, either in the private sector or for an international organization
  • At least four years’ experience editing and proofreading
