The number of lives lost as a result of the Nepal Earthquake has crossed 6,000 and millions of others are severely affected. According to estimates, half a million tents may be urgently needed for the large number of people forced out of their homes due to the devastation apart from other help for the affected. Emergency meetings are being regularly held and the situation is being reviewed by Secretary General of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) Dr S P Agarwal.

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and other partners have pledged their support in the form of providing trained manpower and materials.

The IRCS will be sending additional tarpaulin sheets, family tents, blankets, and another water purification unit to Nepal as soon as all necessary arrangements are finalized.

A meeting was earlier held on 27 April at the IRCS National Headquarters in which Dr Agarwal and the Red Cross Movement partners discussed the readiness of relief materials and volunteers for rescue and distribution.

An emergency control room has been set up for continuous monitoring of the situation and mobilizing help as more needs of the affected population are assessed.
