Conflict and war have been increasing around the world, leading to widespread destruction that often prevents people from accessing essential medical care during critical times. As a result, the need for effective emergency medical responses in conflict zones and during natural disasters has become crucial.
“Given the constantly changing dynamics of the world concerning disasters and conflicts, it is essential to maintain the ability to respond to any emergencies that may arise from these situations,” said Cristiana Scano, the then-acting Head of Delegation for ICRC Nairobi.
The training program brings together healthcare delegates from various Red Cross Societies, equipping them with practical simulations to prepare for deployment in any region of the world that may require their assistance.

Yves Giebens, the ICRC Hospital Care Programme Coordinator, emphasized the vital role that local healthcare workers play, particularly in conflict regions like Gaza, where there is an urgent demand for medical aid. He highlighted the importance of collaboration to address the medical needs of communities affected by crises.
“A successful deployment depends on skilled professionals and efficient procedures, with medical staff being essential to meeting the needs of patients on the ground,” said Giebens.
The ICRC, through its Logistics Support Centre, has been at the forefront of providing logistical support to facilitate deployments worldwide, rapidly distributing large volumes of medical equipment via chartered flights and long-haul trucks. Past deployments faced challenges in low-resource environments, but the past year has seen modular hospitals being deployed to Ethiopia, Sudan, Chad and Gaza via Amman, greatly assisting those facing emergencies and life-threatening risks.

“We have created a highly adaptable logistics system that enables us to respond effectively to diverse emergency needs. We focus on sending only essential equipment, such as surgical tools or X-ray machines, to ensure that our team maximizes efficiency and resource management,” said Claire Durham, the Logistics Deployment Coordinator for the Emergency Hospital.
As global emergencies increase, the logistics framework that supports emergency medical responses becomes essential for ensuring that the Emergency Hospital can provide timely and effective care to those in need. We hope that our continued partnerships will enhance emergency medical response capabilities and deliver vital aid during humanitarian crises, ensuring that assistance reaches those most in need, regardless of the challenges faced.
