We firmly believe that careful planning and strategic choices can make a substantial difference in reducing CO2 emissions. What can we achieve when planning on time?

► Reduce the number of orders resulting in work efficiency, optimized transport planning, as well a reduction in paperwork, signatures, and e-mail exchange – all leading to less waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

► More time to find the right supplier (and item) through the in-depth market assessment and targeted search for more sustainable suppliers.

► Ensure the quality standards we aim for by conducting audits and assessments which will guarantee the right quality of the item purchased.

► Reduce the dead stock – meaning reduction of the waste levels.

► Choose the best mode of transport, keeping in mind prioritizing sea and road over air, whenever possible.

TRANSPORT

Sustainable transport involves using environmentally friendly and socially responsible modes of transportation to minimize the impact on the environment. Various initiatives are being implemented to further reduce the environmental impact of our operations:

  • In recent years, the ICRC has transported 4% of goods by air from Geneva to the field.
  • Constantly reviewing routes to prioritize sea and rail transportation whenever possible. For example, in Ethiopia, rail is used to transport goods.
  • Sending full containers is preferred over shipping half-full containers. A study conducted by the ICRC analyzed four countries with significant air transport and concluded that even if containers are only half-full (reefer or not), it is still cost-effective to send them by sea. Although this may result in longer lead times, it reduces CO2 emissions by approximately 94%.
  •  Our supply chain teams collaborate closely with assistance colleagues, who place the orders, to ensure sufficient time is available for selecting the appropriate mode of transport.
