Hawa Said Musse, Senior Health and Nutrition Field Officer with the ICRC in Somalia, has been awarded the 2015 Florence Nightingale Medal. The recognition underlines her engagement for victims of armed conflict and natural disasters for the 25 years she has been with the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
Hawa, 55, joined the ICRC in 2003. She previously served as a National Health Officer for the Somali Red Crescent Society (SRCS) having joined in 1991 during the fall of, then President, Siad Barre’s government. Her greatest asset is her wealth of experience working in the complex and dynamic Somalia environment.
The Florence Nightingale Medal, the highest International distinction a nurse can receive, honours exceptional courage and devotion towards the victims of armed conflict or natural disasters. It also recognizes exemplary services or a creative and pioneering spirit in the areas of public health or nursing education.
Hawa was presented the award by the President of the Somali Red Crescent, Dr. Ahmed, at a ceremony held in SRCS offices in Mogadishu, Somalia, on Monday, 01 June 2015.
