In a very enlightening interview Dr. Sunil Kariyakarawana, the first Buddhist Chaplain to Her Majesty’s (British) Armed Forces, a post he has held for the past 14 years, talks about his personal experience working in the military. One of the most frequent questions he gets asked is: how can you be a Buddhist and be part of the military? Referring to the Dhammapada, he explains that “it is your motivation that really matters. Buddhism cannot be simplified as pacifism. It is far more complex.” He is currently the Buddhist Adviser at St Michael’s College Cardiff University and the Director of the Kalyana Mitra Buddhist Chaplaincy Support Group.
