The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is pleased to announce the publication of a new Burmese language edition of the book Buddhism and International Humanitarian Law (Routledge).
The book, which was originally published in English in 2024, is the the first major study on the intersection between Buddhist teachings and International Humanitarian Law (IHL) – a body of law that protects non-combatants and restricts the means and methods of warfare to limit the suffering it causes.
Its translation forms part of an ICRC project that seeks to explore correspondences between Buddhist and IHL principles, and identify Buddhist resources to improve compliance with IHL and equivalent Buddhist or humanitarian norms.
By making this research available in Burmese language to scholars, monastics and practitioners who shape moral thought in Myanmar, and to contemporary combatants taking part in armed conflict, the ICRC aims to stimulate a local dialogue on how ancient wisdom can humanize the conduct of modern warfare and reduce the suffering of those caught in its wake.
