In this short article in Urdu, Dr. Muhammad Adil from Pakistan discusses the protection granted by Islam and IHL to the elderly during armed conflict. According to Dr. Adil, Islam from its very inception introduced rules to regulate the conduct of hostilities. Both Islamic law and IHL aim at the protection of non-combatants during armed conflict. As the elderly are one of the most vulnerable groups in society, they need enhanced protection. The author advises that within religious communities, the religious dimension of modern international laws should also therefore be highlighted to assure the protection of the elderly.
Dr Muhammad Adil is a lecturer at the Bacha Khan University Charsadda Pakistan, with a PhD in Islamic Studies. He has a deep interest in exploring humanitarian issues from an Islamic perspective. He has been one of the winners of the Second and Fourth ICRC National Essay Competitions in Pakistan in 2019 and 2021.
