On 7 April 2021 the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Philippines, in collaboration with Jamiat Cotabato and Institute of Technology, held a book launching ceremony for the Maguindanao language version of the “Protection of the Victims of Armed Conflict in International Humanitarian Law and Islamic Law” (“Kaparihala Kanu Kalalagit sa Kapembunua A Ga-Usal E Matalem Sia Kanu Dalemu Pangitaban U Sakadunya A Kamamanusiyay Endo Su Pangitaban U Islam”), which was originally authored by Dr. Abdulghani Abdulhamid Mahmud, Professor Public International Law, and Ustadz Doctor Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi, Shaykhul-Azhar, Al Azhar University, Cairo.
This reference work highlights the complementarity of the provisions on the protection of victims of armed conflict both in International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and Islamic Shariah. This is the first publication on Islam and IHL in a local Filipino language, with publications in Maranao and Tausug languages following in due course. It will acts as an important reference for students and teachers to further their research on IHL relevant issues and it will assist religious leaders like Imams and Khatibs to disseminate humanitarian norms and values in their communities.
