Intense discussions, pertinent questions and insightful comments marked the workshop on international humanitarian law (IHL) that was jointly organized by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (or Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali, UNISSA) Brunei. The event was held at the university’s Faculty of Shariah and Law on 31 July with 100 participants, including government officials, representatives of NGOs and students of the Faculty of Shariah and Law, attending.

The workshop focused on helping participants gain a better understanding of the ICRC and humanitarian law through theory sessions led by experts as well as simulated negotiation exercises. Participants took on the role of ICRC delegates and were challenged with the task of upholding the principles of independence, impartiality and neutrality in the face of adverse situations. Following the workshop, a preparatory session was also organized for those participating in the IHL role-play and moot court competition that will be held on 9 and 10 September.
