The ICRC in Tajikistan and the Committee for Religious Affairs jointly organized a two-day workshop on the role of religious leaders in emergencies on from 11 to 12 October 2017.

Due to its geographical location, Tajikistan is highly prone to natural disasters, with over 100 incidents occurring every year. The workshop was organized to raise awareness of disaster preparedness for the potential community participants in relief efforts, and to consider them in the analysis, preparedness and response.

The event took place in Khorog, the capital of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast and brought together religious leaders from all over the country, which was a rare opportunity for the two main branches of Islam to discuss issues relevant to their communities.

The event included sessions on the ICRC and Red Cross Society of Tajikistan action. From the importance of proper dead-body management to prevent disappearances, the ambiguous loss felt by members of a family of a missing person, the psychological support to a population affected by an emergency to a practical exercise on response to emergencies, vital topics were addressed.
