When a conflict ends, mines and ‘explosive remnants of war’ continue to kill, maim, and endanger communities. The ICRC’s work on mitigating weapon contamination allows relief efforts to continue and restores people’s access to essential resources under safer conditions. To this end, different innovative solutions are being explored, including the use of infrared cameras with drones to detect potential contamination and digital platforms that support community risk awareness and safer behaviour practices. Another example is the testing of “signature metal detectors” in support of forensic activities involving exhumation and search of unidentified human remains, making these activities safer whilst ensuring the dignity of the dead.
